Introduction

The goal of our project is approaching mental illnesses and deepen our knowledge about them. We are going to refer to depression, anxiety disorders, Alzheimer, and dissociative disorders, as well as their causes, their symptoms, their physical effects and heredity.

According to the World Health Organization "Mental disorders comprise a broad range of problems, with different symptoms. However, they are generally characterized by some combination of abnormal thoughts, emotions, behaviour and relationships with others."

Despite still being considered a taboo topic, mental illnesses and disorders became the main cause of incapacity and one of the main causes of morbidity in societies, in recent years.

12% of illnesses in the whole world are of the mental type, a percentage that in the developed countries increases to 23%. However, only a quarter of patients with mental disorders receive treatment and only 10% receive adequate treatment. Depression disorders are the third cause of Global Burden of Disease and risk factors (first in developed countries), being predicted that it will be the first one in a worldwide level in 2030, with a likely aggravation of the reported rates of suicide and suicide attempts.

In Portugal, about 23% of the population shows psychiatric disorders and in the European continent, Portugal is only behind Northern Ireland in this subject. Anxiety disorders are the ones that stand out the most between psychiatric disorders, followed by mood affective disorders. 11,8% of the global load of diseases in Portugal corresponds to mental and physical disorders, a higher percentage than oncological diseases and lower than brain-cardiovascular diseases.

Another important factor that has been affecting these problems is the pandemic and the lockdown, the uncertainty and the lack of communication with others.

As you can see, mental illnesses are very present in our society to the point where they can be considered the disease of our generation, therefore we believe it's important to discuss these issues to be able to develop some solutions and treatments.
